The Assassin’s Creed Unity games

Most of the levels that can be completed in single player mode are also available for co-op, so players can accomplish these missions in a different way. When players invite their peers to join their game, all those who participate will start playing from the most recent checkpoint. All of them assume the identity of Arno, but wearing the gear and weapons already unlocked.

The story missions that are reserved to single player are also susceptible to be completed in different ways, by using brute force or stealth. Gameplay of Assassin’s Creed Unity

Assassin’s Creed Unity has refined the combat mechanics that players wanted to be improved and new ones such as fencing were introduced. Some of the weapons from the previous installments have returned, but this expansion introduces the Phantom Blade, which is a highly effective crossbow. This weapon can fire projectiles at long distances, helping players take out armored enemies, before they can sound the alarm. The most satisfying combat mechanics are those performed up close with deadly effect.

Moving around the maps is also easier in Assassin’s Creed Unity, thanks to the Free-run up and Free-run down mechanics. As players level up, their character will learn new skills and unlock new abilities, but some can also be purchased with in-game currency. Interactions between Arno and NPCs are more complex, with players being able to engage any of the computer-controlled characters. Interfering with the life of civilians can be done by settling disagreements, catching thieves or scaring away bullies

Customization is a core concept in Assassin’s Creed Unity and the process goes well beyond the initial stages of setting up a character. By accumulating experience points, players can choose a skill tree that is better suited for their combat type of choice. It is also possible to customize the gear and weapons, with the latter including everything from smoke bombs and pistols, to swords, spears and axes.

What are others saying about Assassin’s Creed Unity?

Assassin’s Creed Unity reviews were positive and they acknowledge the fact that developers made the game to be more challenging. Interactions between the players and AI controlled crowds were also celebrated by both players and reviewers, but the stealth mechanics drew some criticism. The visual improvements and the superior voice acting led to initial review scores of 8 out of 10, despite the occasional technical issues and some faulty mission designs for co-op.

The game was well received by console users, with the next generation devices presenting a beautiful open world. The scope of the game and the customization options were the catalyst behind most positive reviews, as they appeal to both hard-core fans and new players. The lack of a convincing main character however was cited as the main reason for why Assassin’s Creed Unity failed to reach its full potential.

See what Conan O'Brien has to say about Assassin's Creed Unity in his Clueless Gamer video game review:

Assassin’s Creed Unity tournaments

Players can now enjoy the missions in co-op multiplayer after completing them by themselves. Roaming the maps in the company of fellow players and taking on powerful opponents in parties of four is quite exciting. Unfortunately, there is no fully fledged multiplayer, therefore no Assassin’s Creed Unity tournaments for those who seek competition at the highest level. Tom Clancy’s The Division and Watch Dogs are the two games developed by Ubisoft that have better multiplayer and are worth a try.

My rating of Assassin’s Creed Unity

I’ve played all the game in the franchise and it’s only safe to say that as long as Ubisoft is producing them, I’ll keep playing. Assassin’s Creed Unity was in line with my expectations after the release of Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, but deep inside I was hoping for more. I’ve always appreciated the educational value of the games in this series, despite the fact that many events are depicted in a way that might offend some history buffs. As a player and game reviewer, I was more upset with the unrefined stealth and the free running mechanics, therefore I can’t rate this game about 8 out of 10.
