Call of Duty World War II is only the second game in the series developed by Sledgehammer Games. The team working on it made its intention crystal-clear and pursued with a plan to return the franchise to its roots. Activision has a three-year development cycle for the game and is expected to produce another sequel. For this game, the focus was on bringing back fond memories of iconic titles, such as Band of Brothers. To make the game more authentic, some of the game mechanics had to be changed completely.

Sledgehammer Games and the development team had to make the difficult decision of excluding some upsetting settings from their game. They also decided against allowing players to play as soldiers from the Axis powers. Instead, during the single player campaign players can only assume the role of allied soldiers.
