Plot of EA Sports UFC 2

EA Sports UFC 2 doesn’t have a plot per se, but has a career mode that is supposed to act as a substitute. The developers didn’t put much thought into it though and it was reduced to a couple of training mini games. These missions only serve the purpose of honing their skills of amateurs and prepare them for the real fights. With each successful battle, players enhanced their athletes, which should make it easier for them to win the next fight.

As all championships, this one has a clear prize, with the most successful players claiming the title. Once players complete this string of missions, they should check out the Ultimate Team inspired by FIFA 16 and Madden NFL 16. EA Sports made this sequel very successful among sports loving fans and did a decent job with this UFC simulator. Players can collect teams of five players and compete against AI controlled opponents or real players to accumulate points.

These points serve as resources in the game and they can be spent on various attacks, such as punches and kicks. There are also packs of cards up for grabs, which randomly unlocked various fighting styles and even more attacks. This has a two-pronged effect, on one hand keeping players motivated to follow through with the career mode. At the same time, it makes the game less predictable and some players were annoyed by the fact that they couldn’t unlock this game mechanics by proper training.

Development of EA Sports UFC 2

Developers started working on EA Sports UFC 2 months after the official release of the first game in the series. EA Canada decided to follow the advice of fans and operate major changes to the game upon its release. The early reviews were positive and the general score revolved around 80 out of 100, with critics being fascinated by the visuals. Some complaints were issued in regard to the randomness of some battles and the progression system of career mode. It came under intense scrutiny from both professional reviewers and players and the consensus was that this mode is underwhelming.

The combat itself received mixed reviews, with some critics appreciating the realism of the game. Others were upset by the unintuitive controls and regarded some of the game mechanics as clumsy. Commentary was also in the crosshairs of some reviewers, as the lines uttered by commentators tend to get repetitive.

EA Sports UFC 2 tournaments

EA Sports UFC 2 allows players to compete among themselves in multiplayer once they are ready. Electronic Arts didn’t envision any tournaments so players would be better off choosing other sports games developed by them. Madden NFL 16, FIFA 16 or titles developed by the competition, such as PES 2016 or NBA 2K16 are all great choices.

My rating of EA Sports UFC 2

I’ve never been a big fan of Ultimate Fighting Championship, and I consider this fights a bit too violent for my taste. However, I recognize a good simulator when I see one and EA Sports UFC 2 checks most of the boxes. The thing is that I got bored pretty quickly and was able to find repetitive stuff. I can only imagine that fans of the genre will find the flaws faster and they’ll have a deterring effect on them. A review score of 8 out of 10 looks fair to me, but I don’t expect everyone to agree with this rating.
