Gameplay of The Evil Within 2
The Evil Within 2 gameplay has all the standard elements of a survival horror video game. It has detective Sebastian Castellanos as the central character and it is played from a third person perspective. Once players assume the role of the courageous detective they enter the world of Union to save his daughter. Right from the start, they are presented with the option of choosing between three difficulty modes. They don’t essentially alter the gameplay, but make significantly influence the learning curve.
Compared to first person shooters where players can blast their way to victory, The Evil Within 2 gameplay is more subtle. Players have to roam across large maps and do it quietly to avoid detection whenever possible. While they don’t have powerful weapons to blast nightmarish creatures to pieces, they wield a tool known as "The Communicator". This helps them detect objects in the dark, by using resonance and pick up vital hints for the narrative.
The best part about the huge maps is that players can explore them freely and are not compelled by a linear chain of quests. Stealth mechanics are at the cornerstone of The Evil Within 2 gameplay, as players usually have to avoid being spotted. It is also possible for them to sneak behind opponents and kill them without triggering the alarm. The central character has an original set of abilities divided into five distinct trees. These go by the name of health, stealth, combat, recovery and athleticism. Players enjoy a lot of freedom in customizing these abilities, so they better serve their idea of completing the game.
Plot of The Evil Within 2
The plot of The Evil Within 2 picks up three years after the events depicted in the original game, at the Beacon Mental Hospital. Sebastian Castellanos is no longer working for the police, and is assuming that his daughter Lily died in a house fire. When he is contacted by a representative of MOBIUS, a mysterious organization that allegedly faked her death he begins to investigate.
To find her, he has to enter a simulated utopian town called Union and powered by a new STEM system. When the MOBIUS organization loses control of this world, things take a turn for the worse and the idyllic town turns into a nightmare. Sebastian decides to go in and inside he encounters other people working for the same organization. They are trying to survive in this world overrun by monsters while also providing hints about Lily and her whereabouts.
The detective finds out where his daughter is being held captive and finds out more about her critical role in the ecosystem. In the second half of the single player campaign, Sebastian meets Father Theodore Wallace. Initially he appears to help him, but his mental frailty eventually turns him into a real threat that the detective has to deal with.
As The Evil Within 2 story reaches its conclusion, Sebastian confronts 'The Matriarch', the creature holding Lily captive. Outside the Union, MOBIUS operators realize the fact that the detective is now aware of the truth. To prevent him from destroying the organization, they scramble to kill him inside the simulated city. They fail and Sebastian and his daughter escape this nightmarish world and decide to start their lives somewhere else. Meanwhile, the STEM system recovers and the world of Union is re-created.
Development of The Evil Within 2
The Evil Within 2 development began one year after the original game was released. Tango Gameworks produced the downloadable content for the first game and then begin work on the sequel. A new director was chosen, but the team made their intention of maintaining the same structure clear. They paid attention to the feedback provided by players and wanted to make the story easier. Even though shifting realities were not scrapped altogether, the story was made easier to understand.
Among the things that have changed in the second game is the removal of the aspect ratio. In terms of visuals, the developers chose not to alter the horror features and keep the game as scary as before. They have succeeded in their attempts to create a psychological horror game that gets players immersed into the narrative. News broke out about the release of the new game in March 2017 and it was scheduled for November. It was officially announced by Bethesda at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2017.
Where can I download The Evil Within 2?
Bethesda Softworks is the obvious place to go to download Evil Within 2. That’s because as the video game publisher it has the best deals for the game and also the possibility of acquiring bundles. Doom, Dishonored 2, The Elder Scolls Skyrim, Fallout 4, Wolfenstein II The New Colossus and Battle Cry are some of the other games that can be found here. Players also have the option of visiting the game developer if they want to purchase the sequel alongside the original Evil Within.
What are others saying about The Evil Within 2?
The Evil Within 2 was a highly anticipated title after the game was announced in the first half of 2017. Reviews written by critics and players alike met expectations, as both parties were pleasantly surprised by the sequel. One thing they appreciated was the fact that the narrative is just as strong, while being easier to understand. There was no price to pay in exchange of simplicity and both the story and characters were convincing and gets players immersed into the nightmarish world of Union.
Some players complained that the single player campaign although fun, is not long enough to justify the investment. Their argument was that once the narrative concludes, the game has very little lasting appeal. Replayability is a big problem for all horror survival video games and The Evil Within 2 falls into the same category. There were also some players complaining about the fact that the difficulty curve is pretty steep and the game risks becoming frustrating.
My Rating of The Evil Within 2
I have never complained about the difficulty of games and I’m definitely not going to start now. The Evil Within 2 is a reasonably challenging game, but precisely what I expect from a horror survival type. Quite frankly, developers nowadays seem to be overly concerned about the fact that players might be intimidated by the difficulty curve. If you like a challenge and don’t mind a game that keeps you at the edge of your seat, this is a decent choice.
The story is well written although some chapters don’t make too much sense and fail to explain the details well enough. On the other hand, 15 hours is not that long if you think about the low replayability and shallow lasting appeal of this game. The Evil Within is over before you know it and once it’s done, there is little reason to revisit the single player. The bottom line is that as horror survival games go, this one is certainly in the upper half. A review score of 7 out of 10 is fair, but more than that is hard to justify.
