Halo Spartan Strike is a twin stick shooter video game developed by Vanguard Games and 343 Industries. It is the only game in the Halo universe that can be played on Windows phones and iOS in addition to PCs. Super soldiers commonly referred to as Spartans are the heroes of this game and they wield an impressive arsenal of weapons. Players participate in a string of war games that simulate events from the original franchise.

Key facts about Halo Spartan Strike

  • Halo Spartan Strike is a top-down shooter built around the characters and events from the science fiction Halo universe.
  • Popular weapons such as the Suppressor, Scatter Shot, Incineration Cannon and Binary Rifle appear next to new guns.
  • Halo Spartan Strike introduces new armor and defensive abilities and Promethian gear that enhance survivability.
  • The videogame was criticized for the high amount of grinding in the late stages of each match.
  • Halo Spartan Strike doesn’t have a multiplayer and can’t be played in cooperative mode either.

The Halo Spartan Strike games

Halo Spartan Strike games are loosely based on the action enjoyed by players in the main games of the franchise. The bird's eye view provides some interesting sights of the battlefield, but also complicates the gameplay. Developers found it worthwhile to import many of these skills, weapons and armor from the Halo universe. Some narrative elements can also be found at the core of the single player campaign.

Halo Spartan Strike games also bear some similarities to the title released back in 2013 and called Halo: Spartan Assault. Many of the missions take place inside a tactical simulator and the purpose is to train soldiers. This has a two-pronged effect, allowing players to experience different battlefield circumstances. On the flipside, the missions are deprived of the intensity that used to make some of the scenarios so intense. The game was made compatible with the twin stick style so popular on mobile devices.

What is Halo Spartan Strike

Halo Spartan Strike is the latest installment in the franchise and it was published by Vanguard Games and 343 Industries. The action is played at a fast pace, with super soldiers battling on virtual arenas. The game is inspired by the Halo universe and features all the iconic games, armors and some characters. Compared to other games in the series, it has shorter missions and is not a plot driven video game.

Gameplay of Halo Spartan Strike

The gameplay of Halo Spartan Strike is fairly difficult in the early stages, but overall the learning curve is smooth. It helps a lot if players are familiar with the previous game in the series such as Spartan Assault. Even though it was meant as a standalone expansion, this installment is based on those game mechanics. They were refined to work better on smartphones and tablets and to be more responsive. The AI was also improved and players have a harder time dealing with waves of enemies.

The stages are diversified and players no longer get the feeling of playing the same level over and over again. Halo 4's Promethian enemies also make an appearance, to further complicate the gameplay. The arsenal of weapons needs to be used intelligently, and not even the most powerful guns work in all circumstances. The improvement of artificial intelligence is most noticeable during large-scale fights.

Knights and Promethian turrets in conjunction with the Watchers pose the biggest challenges for those who play the game for the first time. The arcade style shooter is played fast and furious, but players need to stay one step ahead of the game. The super soldiers feel invincible on the battlefield, but when swarmed by opponents, they are quickly reduced to pieces. Interactions with NPCs used to be a chore in the previous game, but Halo Spartan Strike has solved this problem.

Veterans are encouraged to shift from one gun to the other and use special abilities such as the shock chain. There are certain differences between Covenant and Promethian and human weapons, but overall they are pretty much the same. On the upside, there are so many weapons to wield that the odds of getting bored anytime soon are slim to none.

Plot of Halo Spartan Strike

Halo Spartan Strike has an original narrative that takes place immediately after Halo 4. Players assume the role of a character that is commonly referred to as Spartan IV. This super soldier is a part of the United UNSC and battles the Covenant and Promethean forces. The missions replicate the events from Halo 2, its sequel Halo 3 as well as the latest games in the series. The campaign is free-flowing and frequently switches from one event to the other.

These missions take players to various cities scattered all across the Halo universe. The Conduit is the vehicle that takes the super soldier to this remote places and a constant presence in the campaign. All in all, there are a total of 20 missions in the main campaign. Someone who has played any of the prequels will have an easy time completing them in a few hours. The challenge is to get high scores, by using boosters to acquire more experience points. The alternative is obviously to replay the stages.

Development of Halo Spartan Strike

Halo Spartan Strike didn’t spend a lot of time in the making, because developers already had a good idea about how the final product would look like. They made good use of the new missions added in the other Halo games and the latest weaponry. Their top priority was to make the game compatible with mobile devices powered by various operating systems. The results met expectations, as the game can be played on smartphones and tablets running on iOS, Android and Windows.

Where can I download Halo Spartan Strike?

Microsoft Studios is the publisher of Halo Spartan Strike, so head on to their website to download the game. Here you can find the other titles in the series, including the immensely popular Halo 5 Guardians. The same company has published Quantum Break, Crackdown 3, Gears of War 4 and ReCore among other games. There is a strong possibility for players to purchase a bundle of games at discounted prices.

What are others saying about Halo Spartan Strike?

Halo Spartan Strike was met with enthusiasm by fans of the franchise who want to play on mobile devices. Players have noticed the obvious improvements made to the game after the less successful release of Spartan Assault. Some complain about the fact that some missions felt a bit repetitive and the weapons and very much alike.

Developers were quick to address those complaints, by introducing new guns and improving existing ones. The addition of new factions and more powerful enemies also helped improve the overall reviews score. The responsiveness of the game across mobile devices powered by various operating systems was also a catalyst for growth. Players were a bit disappointed that the single player campaign could be completed in a bit over four hours.

Halo Spartan Strike tournaments

The twin stick shooter videogame was supposed to provide a couple of hours of entertainment for those playing on mobile devices. The single player campaign provides just enough replayability to keep players hooked. While its popularity among fans of the franchise is undeniable, the absence of a multiplayer left many game buyers disappointed. In the absence of Halo Spartan Strike tournaments, players need to look elsewhere for these thrills. First-person shooters such as Counter Strike Global Offensive, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 and Gears of War 4 are great choices.

My rating of Halo Spartan Strike

I spend so little time playing games on my mobile that Halo Spartan Strike wasn’t at the top of my list of priorities. What began as an experiment for reviewing purposes, turned into a fun activity that got me completely hooked. I was among the lucky few who have played most of the games in the Halo series, so I knew what to expect. It’s always exciting to see some of the characters back in the spotlight, even on a much smaller screen.

Halo Spartan Strike is the kind of entertaining game that appeals to casual players. Anyone who has played at least one of the flagship Halo video games should give it a try. Don’t set your hopes too high because this is not a blockbuster videogame, but rather a distraction from serious titles. I will give it a review score of 8 out of 10 for the sheer effort of bringing the Halo universe to smartphones and tablets.
