Gameplay of Star Wars Battlefront 2

Star Wars Battlefront 2 has an impressive single player campaign and the narrative is at the cornerstone of the videogame. Players can spend a lot of time customizing their characters, with plenty of options to create unique heroes. Content is based on the Last Jedi and the Force Awakens Hollywood blockbusters, features many locations from the movies and all the important characters.

The single player keeps players at the edge of their seats for many hours and gets them familiar with the Star Wars Battlefront 2 gameplay. However, when players compete against each other in multiplayer, the action shooter becomes more difficult. Players have the option of choosing between an offline single player, called arcade mode or the co-op. The latter encourages interactions between participants and allows them to choose the side they want to join.

Players who have an EA account can take advantage of the free DLC pack, but many features could only be unlocked with micro-transactions. In the wake of EA postponing their implementation, players have temporary access to most of them. In multiplayer, there are five distinct game modes, with as many as 40 players in one game. Galactic Assault is one of the most popular modes, because it splits players into two equal teams of 20 attackers and defenders. They fight in locations made famous by the movies.

Starfighter Assault is a dynamic game mode that accommodates a total of 24 players which wager war in space. In addition to human controlled ships, the two teams also benefit from reinforcements controlled by the AI. The Heroes vs. Villains game mode has all the standard elements of a team deathmatch. The last game mode goes by the name of blast and it is also a team deathmatch.

The Star Wars Battlefront 2 plot is surprisingly strong and represents the main reason for why people purchase the game. It begins with Iden Versio being interrogated for essential Imperial codes but she escapes captivity. Endor, Iden, Hask and Meeko witness in disbelief how the second Death Star is destroyed before Rebels invade the planet. Iden meets with her father and finds out that the Emperor is dead. With his dying breath, the leader ordered the forces to begin Operation: Cinder.

Players travel to an Imperial shipyard and are being attacked by the rebel forces during their voyage. The ship survives the encounter and the rebel cruiser is being destroyed by the Star Destroyer Dauntless. Meeko travels to Pillio where she meets Luke Skywalker and together they destroy the base. The change in scenery is amazing and makes the plot of Star Wars Battlefront II even more exciting.

In the ensuing chaos, Iden and Meeko attempt to rescue civilians and are betrayed by Agent Hask in the process. Branded as traitors to the Empire, they have no option, but to seek the assistance of the Rebels. The latter accept their assistance and together destroy the satellites that Operation: Cinder was relying on. This leads to the liberation of Naboo and the Inferno Squad joins the New Republic.

In the second half of the campaign, Iden and the Inferno Squad meet Han Solo and together they cripple the Imperial fleet. She also tries to save her father but instead of her pleas, Admiral Versio decides not to abandon the sailing ship. Iden escapes and is reunited with Del then the game moves forward decades. Del is captured, handed over to Kylo Ren and ultimately killed by Hask who begins the hunt for Iden.

Development of Star Wars Battlefront 2

Star Wars Battlefront 2 development began in the first half of 2016, when EA Dice shook hands with Criterion Games. Together they worked on a sequel for the game released in the previous year, enhanced by content from Hollywood blockbusters. It features a new expansion system, which was supposed to make things easier for players. Developers regarded the previous one as dangerous because it fragmented the player community. The game spent a short time in beta testing before being released in November.

Players also had the option of testing the game in open beta and use the 10 hour trial version. The goal was to attract as many players as possible and convince them that the new installment in the series has plenty to offer. EA has announced the imminent release of downloadable content. The game already has a tie-in noble, which goes by the name of Star Wars Battlefront 2: Inferno Squad. It was released in July 2015 while the first DLC was announced in November.

What are others saying about Star Wars Battlefront 2?

Star Wars Battlefront 2 reviews were split and the ratings varied wildly from as little as 10 out of 100 and more than 80. Players and critics who focused exclusively on the game mechanics, narratives and visuals were pleasantly surprised. The game is better looking than its predecessor and has a lot to offer to fans of the franchise. It is also a must-play for Star Wars fans who want to spend some time exploring the familiar worlds. The ratings have remained consistently high in the following months.

At the same time, there are hundreds of terrible Star Wars Battlefront 2 reviews, projecting an image of overwhelming dislike. The huge controversies that engulfed the game and its developer were caused by the micro-transactions. EA was so shocked by the review bombing and the vocal criticism that decided to postpone their implementation. Players were unhappy that micro-transactions essentially transformed the game from a competitive one into a pay to win experience.

My Rating of Star Wars Battlefront 2

Let me start by saying that I’m 100% behind those who strongly oppose pay to win games. I don’t think that the online gaming community should be limited by financial constraints. If you are good at a game, then you deserve to spend time in the spotlight. I do understand the importance of micro-transactions to fund a game, but only when you pay for vanity items. As long as somebody has the upper hand over his peers in a videogame, just because he has more money, things are obviously wrong.

It would be impossible for me to endorse Star Wars Battlefront 2 if EA would insist on making it a pay-to-win game. At the same time, I do like this game a lot and I think that the developers did a really good job. The story is strong, the game modes for multiplayer are quite exciting and it’s a pleasure trying them all. Star Wars fans with a keen eye for gaming are certainly going to enjoy the time spent online. Strictly from a game reviewing perspective, this is a title that I can rate 8 out of 10 without second thoughts.
