TAB used to be the absolute leader in the Australian market, providing the complete package for those who wanted to bet on sports. Competition is now more intense, with companies such as CrownBet, Sportsbet, Unibet and Betfair challenging their lead. While they no longer enjoy a monopoly, the products they offer are still in high demand and their reputation precedes them. Beyond national borders, they are less successful, but still a good alternative for those who seek quality service.

TAB will have players signing up for a real money account before they can place the first bets. The few bonuses and promotions offered by the bookmaker will be immediately available. They don’t have a casino or poker section.

Key facts about TAB

  • TAB offers the ultimate tote products and covers virtually all horse and greyhound races in Australia and New Zealand.
  • The bookmaker has an impressive selection of markets dedicated to Australian sports and players can also bet on lower divisions.
  • TAB accepts larger wagers than most bookmakers and the multiple bet system empowers its members to win life-changing amounts.
  • Compared to other bookies, both domestic and international, they don’t offer free bets and the promotions feel rather restrictive.
  • TAB faces certain limitations due to prohibitive government regulations, with Australians being ineligible for live betting.

TAB betting

TAB has gradually expanded its betting offer, to accommodate those who are interested in more than horse and greyhound racing. These two remain at the cornerstone of their offer and present unique betting opportunities to savvy punters. Australian sports and international football are also well covered. Less attention is paid to American sports, basketball, ice hockey, and winter sports. Still, there are some great betting opportunities for rugby, cricket and tennis fans.

TAB was expected to continue its expansion with more popular sports and include video games.  The decision to exclude eSports is both surprising and disappointing under these circumstances.

TAB football

Australians have gradually learned to love football and they are now betting often on both domestic and international matches. The selection of markets for the main division as well as the inferior leagues has improved greatly over the last few years. European football is still the one that reigns supreme when it comes to the king of sports. There are an average of nearly 100 markets for each match.

The selection of betting handicaps is relatively shallow and players are limited to choosing between a few spreads. Exotic markets are also available when betting on football, with punters wagering on the goalscorer, the number of goals, results at half time and full-time or the number of free kicks. Some of the best offers are available to those who bet prior to the start of the competition.

TAB horse racing

The TAB horse racing section is the best one by far. Players find here all the popular markets and all the Australian and New Zealand races are covered. The odds are terrific, and in addition to picking winners, savvy punters can use the quinellas, trifectas and quaddies to win more cash. Tote betting also has the advantage of players being guaranteed win, with the total pool being divided between entries and the maximum payout is capped. The learning curve can be a bit steep for Europeans and those who don’t bet on horse racing often.

Live and Mobile Gaming at TAB

TAB allows its members to watch many of the games in real-time, including Australian sports, horse races and most of the important football matches. The problem is that the Australia’s Interactive Gambling Act denies local players the chance to bet as the games unfold. It can be frustrating to pick up the phone whenever they want to place a bet live, but this is the only way to do it without breaking the law. Players who reside beyond borders and bet here will not feel the impact of these restrictions.

TAB operates a mobile site that players can navigate using smartphones and tablets powered by Android and iOS operating systems. They have developed an application for all these devices, for a more convenient gaming experience.

How are the limits and odds at TAB?

TAB chose not to set the minimum and maximum limits up front and instead chose to inform players that these are at the sole discretion of the bookmaker. The bookmaker margin slightly exceeds 6%, which is rather disappointing since the industry average revolves around 5%. This means that in the long run players will have to be either lucky or extremely good at what they’re doing to stay profitable. It can be a problem for those who bet larger amounts or gamble on a daily basis.

TAB casino

TAB doesn’t have a casino section, which is a bit strange given the fact that most bookmakers chose to walk down this path. They provide players with more sports betting options than they did back in the day, but this is pretty much all they are willing to offer. Those who enjoy the thrills of other gambling genres, could get their fix at Virgin Games, Mr. Green Casino, Roxy Palace, Slots Village or PlayNow.

TAB games

As mentioned above, there is no possibility to play casino games against either real dealers or the random number generator. Not even the popular Australian pokies were added.

Is TAB safe and reliable?

TAB has been for many years the go-to bookmaker for Australian players. It is licensed with local authorities and monitored for fairness. The local legislators are pretty strict when it comes to sports betting, but these guys never had a problem in abiding by these rules. As for the odds, players can compare them to the ones offered by other bookies and decide for themselves.

There is no danger to players coming from inside, as TAB is fair and transparent, but outside threats do exist. To keep them in check and prevent valuable information and even funds being stolen, TAB uses firewalls. They also use the 128 bit SSL encryption technology that financial institutions also rely upon. This is the reason for why despite being operational for so long, members were never confronted with such issues.

How do you register at TAB?

TAB is one of the bookmakers that require players to prove their identity during the initial stages of the registration process. This approach has the merit of reducing the risks of underage gaming and mitigates the risks of fraud as well. The verification can take a while and players have to wait a bit until they are actually able to bet.

Assuming the automated check fails, they will have to complete the form and deliver it by Australia post. The alternative is to send photocopies bearing the signature of an approved referee. These are cumbersome requirements for those who are used to the simplified process of international bookmakers. They can have a deterring effect on those who want to speed up registration.

Payment options and cash out times at TAB

TAB has included credit cards, electronic wallets and bank transfers on the list of accepted payment methods. They only allow players from countries where gambling is legal to play here. No commission is charged for deposits or withdrawals. Players only have to pay the amounts charged by the financial institutions.

TAB doesn’t have the fastest payouts, regardless of which payment methods players choose to use. This should serve as an additional argument in favor of picking e-wallets, over both credit cards and wire transfers. The waiting time can be reduced from five banking days to 48 hours. Cash outs can only be performed after the identity verification procedures are completed.

TAB promo & bonus codes

TAB will match the first deposit of those who sign up for a new account, but the amount offered for free pales in comparison to what other bookmakers offer. This is one of their biggest shortcomings, as players get to choose between a few campaigns and the promotions offered are not the most generous ones. There are no free bets to those who refer their friends but the ‘Number 1 Club’ rewards program provides players with the incentive to stay loyal and active.

TAB service and support

Customer support is offered 24/7 and players get to choose between picking up the phone, writing an email or using the live chat. The latter is the most popular solution, but the bookmaker also offers toll-free numbers to Australian players.

What are others saying about TAB?

TAB still has a dominant position in Australia and despite the steep competition, it is preferred by many of those who bet on horse races. The odds are actually lower and the  they have one of the biggest bookmaker margins. This rather bad and it doesn’t recommend them to those who reside beyond borders. They enjoy the backing of the Tabcorp Holdings, therefore project an image of trustworthiness. These guys also allow players to bet larger amounts than competitors.

Australian punters celebrate their track record and their obvious commitment to improve, by offering more sports and going beyond horse and greyhound racing events. The advantages of multi betting are highlighted in most professional reviews. They are also acknowledged by those who use the flexi betting options for races and other sports. The verification procedures have generated mixed reactions. Some appreciate the dedication to prevent fraud and underage gaming, others are annoyed by the long waiting times.

My rating of TAB

I’ve had a great time betting with Australian operators and I had high expectations from one of the local leaders. TAB exceeded expectations when it came to horse and greyhound racing and I was also satisfied with the selection of Australian sports. When it comes to football and tennis, they are on par with international bookmakers. Sadly, the deeper you dig, the more obvious the shortcomings are.

I’ve only opened account after the bookmaker gave its website an overhaul and I really like the new great betting interface. I can see why so many horse racing fans prefer them over other bookmakers. Still, I can’t wholeheartedly recommend them given the low odds they offer. I also accept the role of identity verification in the early stages of registration, but I know for sure that many punters will be annoyed by these procedures. For all these reasons I can only give a review score of 7 out of 10.
