Counter Strike Global Offensive

Counter Strike Global Offensive is the sequel to the popular first-person shooter game that revolutionized the genre more than a decade ago. It took a while for developers to come up with a sequel that would run on consoles, but it was one worth waiting for. One of the best games for PlayStation 4, it features all the classic content and uses the advancements of technology to deliver better looking maps, weapons and characters.

Counter Strike Global Offensive adds new guns to an already impressive arsenal, without operating too many changes in terms of gameplay. New game modes were added to what is essentially a videogame destined to be played almost exclusively in multiplayer. Arms Race, Demolition and Deathmatch modes are played at the highest competitive level, but can also be enjoyed over LAN. Of all first-person shooters played in major international tournaments, Counter Strike Global Offensive is the most popular.

Dark Souls 2

Dark Souls 2 is a proud heir of the original game and is in line with the high expectations of the fans. Those who were hoping for an action role-playing videogame that is difficult to beat are not disappointed by the third installment. Published by Bandai Namco, it has preserved all the core gameplay mechanics that were much appreciated by the fans, while tweaking them to have the game run on PlayStation 4.

The Dark Souls 2 plot unfolds in a dark environment, where pretty much everything out there is hell-bent on killing you. The updated combat systems make it one of the best games for PlayStation 4, with a learning curve that is unforgiving in the later stages. Those who finish the single player campaign can put their skill to the test in PVP and co-op modes, but the main campaign is the best part of the videogame.

Watch Dogs

Watch Dogs is one of the video games for PlayStation 4 developed and published by Ubisoft. The action-adventure third person shooter invites players to explore the city of Chicago and complete a string of quests. The protagonist manipulates the environment and the advanced systems that govern the entire city by hacking into computers.

Stealth is used in most missions, but when everything else fails, players have the necessary arsenal to engage rivals and the authorities in firefights. Car chases are made more exciting by the fact that the central character can hack into the city systems to mess with the stoplights. The multiplayer version of the game supports up to eight players which can complete various missions in co-op.

Deus Ex Mankind Divided

Deus Ex Mankind Divided is a videogame for consoles developed by Eidos Montréal and published by Square Enix. The narrative of the action role-playing videogame picks up where the original left, with certain characters making the comeback. The strong story and the stealth elements make the new release a worthy successor of the popular videogame that hit the stores back in 2011.

Deus Ex Mankind Divided grants players more freedom than the predecessor, while presenting them with new technologies and body augmentations. The visuals are superior and voice acting was greatly improved, to make the plot more convincing and immersive. Throughout the campaign, players make decisions that determine the outcome of the game and also shape the manner in which the plot unfolds.

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is an open action-adventure platform videogame that continues the story of the central character in the original title. The expansion to consoles was possible thanks to the new and improved game engine. It adds a new layer of depth to its gameplay, but doesn't complicate it greatly. One of the most expected games for PlayStation 4 in 2016, it has Faith at the cornerstone of its narrative, as she fights a dictatorial regime of corporations.

Players get to see the city of Glass from an entirely different perspective, with few in-game loading screens and better visuals. Mirror’s Edge Catalyst has perhaps some of the best sound effects and equally impressive voice acting. Both have the uncanny effect of enhancing the appeal of a rather long campaign. Weapons are removed altogether, which marks a premier for the genre and players rely exclusively on melee combat and parkour abilities.

Assassin’s Creed Unity

Assassin’s Creed Unity is the last action-adventure videogame in the franchise developed by Ubisoft, whose action is set in the background of the French revolution. The fight between Templars and Assassins continues in this videogame, which acts as a sequel to Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag. The stories however are not intertwined, as most of the campaign unfolds in the city of Paris.

Fans will recognize the core mechanics from the previous installments, with new stealth features and new weapons and gear. Players unlock skills as they level up and can perform increasingly complex combo moves to bring down clusters of enemies. The co-op multiplayer allows a maximum of four players to team up to complete the most complex missions.

Diablo III

Diablo III is an action role-playing videogame, the third major installment in the franchise established by Blizzard Entertainment in the late 90s. 12 years have passed since the previous release, which makes this title one of the first games for PlayStation 4 produced by the software developer. The game was followed one year later by a standalone expansion that goes by the name of Diablo III Reaper of Souls.

The new skill bar enables players to shift from one talent to the other, which in turn results in an action-packed gameplay. Diablo III adds new classes, some inspired by the original and adorned with new abilities and talents while some are brand-new. After players complete the main quests, they can replay all the missions on higher difficulty to gather better loot.

Uncharted 4 A Thief’s End

Uncharted 4 A Thief’s End is one of the exclusive games for PlayStation 4, published and developed by Sony Entertainment. Nathan Drake is the protagonist and as the narrative unfolds, he reconnects with some of the characters from the previous installments. The single player is the game’s strongest suit, but players can also put their skill to the test in the multiplayer mode.

Moving around is much easier and intuitive in Uncharted 4 A Thief’s End, because the improved AI makes climbing and shooting better. During and between missions, players are bound to be impressed by the short cinematic moments, but also by the stellar voice acting.

Call of Duty Black Ops 3

Call of Duty Black Ops 3 is a military science fiction first-person shooter, the third in the series developed by Treyarch. Essentially a game for multiplayer, it can be enjoyed by as many as four players teaming up for the co-op mode. The single player campaign is more than a rehearsal for multiplayer, with players unlocking progressively better weapons and various tokens. The main mission set includes dozens of quests, each posing unique challenges and all can be completed in more than one way.

At the end of the campaign, players have the option of jumping on the multiplayer bandwagon, or continue the single player experience in the Nightmares mode. This will pit them against incoming waves of zombies, with some of the missions taking place on the familiar maps. Most of them however force players to navigate uncharted waters, as this game mode has its very own progression scheme.

F.E.A.R. 3

F.E.A.R. 3 is a first-person survival horror videogame and one of the best games for PlayStation 4 belonging to this genre. Developed and published by Day 1 Studios it has the best looking visuals of all the videogames in the series, scary cinematics and its missions are littered with ghoulish apparitions. The first-person shooter elements are amazing, but the emphasis was clearly on making the game as scary as possible. The dark environment and great voice acting get players immersed completely the gameplay.

F.E.A.R. 3 is the first videogame in the series to have a co-op mode as well, for players seeking the adrenaline rush of multiplayer. The single player campaign is longer than any of the sequels, with players assuming the roles of the two main characters. Each has his own set of abilities, so the gameplay mechanics differ greatly. As a result players can complete each mission in at least two ways.
