Dota 2

Dota 2 is the best paying of all MOBA games, with millions of dollars in tournament prize pools. This multiplayer online battle arena game is the sequel of a game mode inspired by Warcraft III. It came a long way since the original Defense of the Ancients mode, but the gameplay didn’t change too much. With millions of players online and many more watching the games between professionals, it hit new highs.

The game is played between two teams, with each of them having up to five players. The goal is to destroy the base defended by opponents, while leveling of the characters. Each time players destroy NPCs or cause the untimely demise of their opponents, they move up the ladder one step. Compared to other games belonging to this genre, this one rewards incremental progress and surprises are not that often.

League of Legends

League of Legends is no longer the best paying multiplayer online battle arena game. However, of all MOBA games this one has the most fans playing and watching the games. With more than 100 heroes to choose from, its gameplay is inspired by the classics. It is considered to be slightly easier to play and it features colorful graphics that appeal to beginners.

The game is free to play but developers made a lot of money by cashing in on the lucrative system of micro-transactions. These are voluntary and players decide if they want to acquire heroes, skins or other vanity items. Heroes can also be unlocked by spending the XP points awarded to those who play the game. Both in and outside the game, these points are awarded in greater numbers to the winning players.

Heroes of the Storm

Heroes of the Storm is Blizzard Entertainment’s take on the multiplayer online battle arena genre. It is one of the newest MOBA games, but has already generates a lot of traction among the fans. The emphasis is on team play and those who work together are more likely to succeed. Players are supposed to capture objectives, rather than killing opponents, which is a steep departure from standard strategy.

Heroes of the Storm has fewer heroes then most of its counterparts, but more maps to choose from. Heroes respawn much faster and the losing team has a better chance at turning things around. Completing in game objectives is at the cornerstone of any successful strategy and players need to be flexible. Each hero has its own abilities and in the absence of upgradable gear and items, these are more important.

SMITE

SMITE is pretty much an outsider among the most popular MOBA games. Even though it doesn’t have the same large community of gamers as most of its counterparts, it is fun to play nonetheless. It brings in the spotlight mythological creatures, as well as many of the legendary heroes and gods of old. The abilities, special skills and items are truly original and this is what makes the game special.

SMITE has found its way in the eSports arena and there are large-scale tournaments for players to join. The game is free to play and once again micro-transactions are at the cornerstone of its monetization scheme. There are only a couple of maps to choose from, but several game modes and all of them have unique perks. The progression system makes the game surprisingly balanced in the later stages

Heroes of Newerth

Heroes of Newerth no longer plays a prominent role among MOBA games, despite taking the world by storm in 2010. Produced by S2 Games it draws inspiration from the Defense of the Ancients, as most of its counterparts do. It was always free to play but lost its polish over the last couple of years, with fewer heroes being added. Over time, it developed a cult following and can rely on a dedicated core of players.

Compared to other multiplayer online battle arena games, this is significantly more complicated. Heroes of Newerth rewards individual skill more than team play, in dissonance with the latest additions to the genre. The game follows the proven format with three lanes and players need to pay attention to everything that happens on the map. The videogame is also praised for its matchmaking system.

Paragon

MOBA games feel more of the same to those who have played a lot of titles belonging to this genre. Paragon however is a unique multiplayer online battle arena game played from a third person perspective. It was developed by Epic Games and can be played on both PlayStation 4 consoles and PCs powered by Microsoft Windows. It makes the most of the Unreal Engine 4 and it is played at a very fast pace.

Those who play Paragon appreciate the third person perspective which offers unique vantage points. The limited number of heroes available leaves much to be desired but developers promise to add new ones. Players who preorder the game gained access to the special packs called Founder's Pack, Challenger Packs and Master Packs. The developers hope to make Paragon a candidate for the eSports arena.

Vainglory

Vainglory is one of the MOBA games of superior quality that can be played on tablets and smartphones. The owners of devices running on android and iOS operating systems can enjoy the game produced by Super Evil Megacorp. It is to some extent similar to the standard multiplayer online battle arena video games but has plenty of original concepts.

Players are supposed to attain control over certain points on the map and defend them to generate more resources. Working together for the greater good is essential and not even the most skilled players have a chance at surviving on their own. Vainglory was the proud recipient of multiple awards for bringing quality gaming on mobile devices. The hero roster consists of 20 heroes, but it is poised to grow.

Battleborn

Battleborn was developed by Gearbox Software and it is the most successful of their few MOBA games. Its compatibility with all consoles in addition to PCs explains why it ranks so high in our preference. Players were pleasantly surprised to discover that the hype surrounding the videogame was well justified by the final execution. Initially only 25 heroes were available but many more were added later on.

The objective in Battleborn is to lead your team to victory by completing various objectives. Killing opponents and controlling key points on the map allows players to upgrade their own heroes. The level of competition gets more intense as players accumulate more experience, improve their gear and weapons. When playing this videogame, players are expected to strive to create the best combination of heroes.

Clash of Lords

Clash of Lords is a strategy game with strong multiplayer online battle arena elements. It has a collection of more than 40 heroes, most of them with original skills despite the similarities. It can be played both against the environment and other players, with the PVP mode being the most exciting. The game was inspired by the runaway success of Clash of Clans and borrowed many of its key concepts.

The videogame is played at a fast pace and allows players to activate battle skills during the game. With so many heroes at their disposal, players can produce several combinations of heroes. There are a total of nine game modes and all of them are just as competitive, although some are more difficult than the other. Clash of Lords is a free to play game that relies on micro-transactions to finance itself.

Boom Beach

Supercell is the driving force behind Boom Beach, a videogame that can be played on mobile devices. It belongs to the freemium mobile strategy videogame genre and runs on Android and iOS devices. Its developers found it worthwhile to implement concepts that prove their worth in other games. Clash of Clans is one of the titles that serve as a source of inspiration as the fans will notice the similarities.

Boom Beach lacks the sophistication of other MOBA games but features ample amphibious battles. The difference between this game and some of its counterparts is that players are also supposed to gather resources. This is a somewhat slow process, but a necessary one to build a strong army. Boom Beach has introduced the concept of video replays, which enable players to watch the battle again after it has ended.
