Inspired by the blockbuster video game Warcraft developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment and its sequels, Warcraft The Beginning was released on June 10, 2016. The movie takes place in the fictional world of Azeroth, one inhabited by humans and orcs and focuses on their early encounters. Fans of the video game, will recognize many of the popular locations. They will get to meet their favorite characters, portrayed by famous Hollywood stars.
Filming took place mostly in Vancouver, with nearly 2 years being dedicated to postproduction and extensive use of computer-generated imagery. The soundtrack for the movie was produced by Ramin Djawadi. He’s been working on Warcraft The Beginning since 2014. The producers have worked closely with Blizzard Entertainment to make sure that the plot stays true to Warcraft lore, therefore will appeal to dedicated fans. The initial movie is expected to grow into a trilogy or even a fully fledged series. It is inspired by World of Warcraft, World of Warcraft Warlords of Draenor and the upcoming World of Warcraft Legion.
A stellar cast for Warcraft The Beginning
Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Robert Kazinsky, Daniel Wu, Ruth Negga, Anna Galvin and Clancy Brown are some of the stars in the movie. Casting began in late 2013, seven years after the movie was announced. Fimmel was chosen to impersonate the leading character Sir Anduin Lothar. The casting announcements were made during the BlizzCon 2014, the most important convention for Blizzard fans.
Fimmel plays the role of a Knight of the Alliance, who dedicates his entire life to the safety of the kingdom. Medivh is another central character in the Warcraft saga. His role is played by Ben Foster and he is assisted in his quest by Ben Scnetzet acting as Khadgar. In order to save the realm, humans need to sign a tenuous packed with their arch enemies: the Orcs led by Durotan whose role is assumed by Toby Kebbel. Another central character in the movie is Paula Patton as Garona Halforcenn. She is an orc-draenei who must prove her allegiance to one faction or the other.
Warcraft The Beginning plot and development
The story begins with seemingly endless waves of orc warriors fleeing the world of Draenor and using the Dark Portal to escape. At the other side of the gate, humans assemble an army to prevent the invaders from entering and subsequently destroy Azeroth. Sir Anduin Lothar and Durotan lead the two armies. Just as they prepare to face each other in battle, a far bigger threat arises. The mortal armies need to band together and overcome their petty rivalries or risk total annihilation.
Warcraft fans were long waiting for a movie and were given a reason to celebrate in May 2016. This is when Warcraft The Beginning was announced. The film was postponed twice with both the 2009 at 2011 release dates being missed. Blizzard Entertainment declined several propositions from movie directors including Uwe Boll. The first concept trailer was revealed in 2013, with two more surfacing in late 2015. The most recent one can be watched on the movie’s official website.
